Pet License FAQ's

Does my pet need a license?

Yes. Pursuant to the Village of Weston Municipal Code Section 10.121, all dogs or cats five (5) months of age or older must be licensed.

Why should I get a license for my pet?

  • The primary reason is to prevent the spreading of rabies. Rabies is a health threat and is 100% fatal for humans if not treated properly.
  • A license is a lost pet's way to get home! When your pet’s license is attached to its collar, your pet’s assigned license number is all that is necessary for the Village to identify the pet's owner.
  • The fees from licensing are used towards the investigations of complaints about stray animals as well as support our local Humane Society.
  • You avoid receiving a fine. (If you own, have custody of or otherwise harbor an unlicensed pet, you may be charged a fine of up to $500).

What do I need to license my pet?

A copy of the current rabies vaccination from your veterinarian along with payment for the license and a completed license application.  (Unaltered Cat-$10, Unaltered Dog-$20; Altered Cat-$5, Altered Dog-$10).

What do I do if I find a lost dog?

Please call the Mountain Bay Metropolitan Police Department at 715-359-3333.

What do I do if I find a lost non-dog stray?

Please call the Mountain Bay Metropolitan Police Department at 715-359-3333 or if the stray is found within the Village of Weston, it may be taken to the Humane Society of Marathon County.

How often does the license have to be renewed?

Pet licenses must be renewed annually. Licenses are valid from January 1 through December 31.

My rabies vaccination expires the year of the licensing.  Should I provide a new vaccination document?

Your pet license should be obtained as close to January 1 as possible. Should the rabies vaccination expire in the current year of the license, please provide the Village Clerk with the updated rabies information as soon as possible.

How do I get a replacement license?

If your pet license tag is lost, you can request a replacement license by contacting the Village Clerk’s office at 715-359-6114 or email clerks@westonwi.gov.

What if my pet passes away during the year?

If your pet is no longer in your household, please contact the Village Clerk’s office at 715-359-6114 or email clerks@westonwi.gov.

How long does it typically take before I receive my dog license?
