I’ve Found a Stray Animal!
The Village of Weston Board has taken steps to show care and concern for stray animals found within its municipality. Earlier this year, the Board approved a contract to work with the Humane Society of Marathon County to take in non-dog strays. In doing so, the Village hopes that our furry friends will once again be reconnected with their owners or find a safe, loving home.
What should you do if you find a stray dog?
Stray dogs which are found in the Village of Weston should be called in to the Mountain Bay Metropolitan Police Department non-emergency number at 715-359-3333. The stray dog will be taken to the Humane Society of Marathon County. The Humane Society provides a list on their website of all pets which are found as strays hoping to find their home or an owner to adopt them.
What if I find a stray cat?
Non-dog strays include cats. The Village of Weston has budgeted funds in its contract with the Humane Society of Marathon County for non-dog strays. If a non-dog stray has been found and the owner is unable to be located, the non-dog stray may be brought to the Humane Society by the Mountain Bay Metropolitan Police Department or a Village of Weston resident. Residents will be asked to provide proof of their residency.
What about feral cats?
If a resident sees a feral cat in the neighborhood and would like to help, the Village of Weston has adopted an ordinance for Community Cats and TVNR program. TVNR is to humanely trap a cat, vaccinate against rabies, sterilize, ear tip and return the cat to the location where it was trapped. A reading of the ordinance can be found here. Residents who participate in the program may be eligible for reimbursement. Reimbursement is limited to $100 per TVNR event. The reimbursement form for the TVNR program can be found here.
