Street Maintenance Projects Throughout the Village

The Village of Weston maintains 119 Centerline miles of roads which equates to 259 lane miles within the Village of Weston. One centerline mile of road is equal to two-lane miles for a typical street but would be 4 lane miles for a street such as Schofield Ave with two lanes in each direction.

Preserving our streets and getting them to last as long as possible before replacement is extremely important. Summertime brings street reconstruction, which is a costly and time-consuming activity, thus the goal is to utilize more frequent street maintenance techniques that help stretch the dollar further.

This summer you will have or will see the following street maintenance techniques in use:

- Crack sealing (~8 miles) – This is the process of filling in cracks on asphalt pavement to prevent water from getting into the pavement layer. Water in pavement causes the most problems in the springtime when freeze/thaw conditions occur and that water then expands within the asphalt layer and further deteriorates the pavement.

- Pavement sealing (~5 miles in 2024) – The Village has used a Gilsonite sealer in recent years which is similar to a driveway sealant. This application restores the asphalt content to the roadway which allows it to stay flexible and thus reduces cracking within the pavement layer. This sealant works to prevent the negative impacts of UV light and oxidation of pavement.

- Asphalt Overlays (~4.3 miles in 2024) – This is a new one-inch layer of asphalt placed on top of existing pavement. The overlay restores the top layer of pavement back to a “like new” condition and also restores positive drainage off of the pavement so water runs off the road instead of staying on the road.

The goal every year is to treat at least 10-15% of the Village with preventative pavement maintenance to help keep our roads in good condition and not rely on just costly reconstruction projects. This year we’re right around 14.5 miles and will continue this theme into future years.
