What Do The Flags In My Yard Mean?

Throughout the year the Village receives calls from residents wondering what the colored flags and spray paint in their yard is for. Sometimes these are called in for Village projects such as a street reconstruction project or for surveying purposes for project planning. However, a lot of the time these flags appear because a utility company such as WPS, TDS, Spectrum, Frontier, etc. is going to be working on their facilities. The flags all mark a different utility line with the colors representing various types of utility lines designated by color:

  • Blue = Water Line
  • Green = Sewer Line
  • Yellow = Gas Line
  • Orange = Communications Line
  • Red = Electric Line
  • Pink = Survey Point
  • White = Proposed Excavation
  • Purple = Irrigation or reclaimed water

Once these flags appear, the excavator or person who called in the locate has 10 working days to complete their work without calling in a new locate request. If you’ve had flags in your yard for more than 2-weeks, it is safe to remove them and you no longer need to mow around or put them back in your yard.
