Chip Sealing

Overview

  • Chip sealing consists of applying an asphalt emulsion and covering that with a thin layer of chips (rocks). 
  • Chip sealing seals in small micro cracks and restores friction to the driving surface.
  • Surface is able to protect original pavement from UV rays.
  • Loose chips are swept up typically within 2 weeks of application.

End Result

  • One advantage of chip sealing is that the road can be open to traffic almost immediately.
  • Pavement surface is rough, provides good friction, after the first winter, the surface is smoothed out by the plows.
